The move from professional football into management has been a good one for many ex pros and for Winchester City F.C. manager Stuart Hussey, this is no exception.
Hussey, 28, who played his professional career for Derby County and Bristol City has now been in charge of Winchester City for 15 games, during this time they have only been defeated once and have won five of their last seven.
Hussey started out in the Derby County academy when The Rams were a Premier League side. He was also lucky enough to be under the guidance of former England Boss Steve McClaren. Hussey spoke of his "under achievement" as he moved on to Bristol City but could never really break out of the reserves.
At the age of 28 most people would expect to still see the City boss playing but a recurring knee problem brought his career to a premature end. After playing centre midfield in his professional career, Hussey was moved up the pitch to striker when playing in what he described as "his best spell" at Bashley FC in the non-league. However, the knee problem returned and a snapped cruciate spelled the end to Hussey's game as a player.
Hussey had offers to come into management at the Wessex Premier level but he said that at the time the opportunity "wasn’t right for him." He went down a few leagues to manage at a lower level "to get a feel for it" before being offered the Winchester City job.
Looking back though, it seems that the City boss hasn't got any real regrets about where his career has headed. Hussey said: "I am enjoying having to work with young lads…to bring them on and get a winning mentality." Something that the players of Winchester City has seem to adopted with their current run of form. The City boss added: "To be fair at the moment I couldn’t be happier with how it is going." If the results keep coming, City fans will be just as happy as their new boss.
