COURSE OUTLINE: BA JOURNALISM

The BA journalism is a very demanding course. It is effectively two courses rolled in to one - a thorough professional training externally validated by the Broadcast Journalism Training council which is taken alongside a demanding course of purely academic study in the areas of history, politics, philosophy, economics, art, literature and current affairs.

The practical aspect of the course is based entirely around continuous live production was first developed in the UK by the course leader Chris Horrie at the London College of Printing and then at another leading postgraduate journalism school in London. A remarkable number of Chris's former students have progressed well and are now following careers in national and international media including as senior news journalists at Sky News, ITN, BBC, Al Jazeera, in national newspapers ranging from the Financial Times and the Guardian to the Sun and the Daily Express.

YEAR ONE (practical modules and courses):

Introduction to practical journalism - including teeline shorthand, precision English, news awareness, national and local news sources, the news agenda, audiences, markets and news values - reporting practice in local government and at magistrates courts and from other official sources.

Media Law and Ethics - a thorough professional training course which will prepare you to produce live news and features (including investigative journalism) while avoiding the danges of libel, contempt of court, trespass, intrusion into privacy and other legal pitfalls.

Practical Radio and Television Production - news and features production for radio, an intensely practical course which teach you have to develop and train your voice, write a script, capture and record, edit and mix ambient sound and interviews. This module culminates in a live free to air broadcasting on a community radio licence in Winchester, and in the production of lenghty radio discussion and magazine programmes webcast as part of the courses' multi-award-winning Winchester News Online website.
